I just finished a 445 mile drive from New Orleans to Texarkana, TX (biz trip). I just had routine maintenance done the week before. My mileage for a 280mi stretch in my Aero SC w/Sentronic (no roofrails) was 28.4MPG at an average speed of 72mph (both SID measured). I had just filled up prior to this run.
80% of the stretch was highway, mostly at speeds of 80++++, 20% two lane road ranging 50-70+mph. 25% of the stretch had gentle rolling hills. A/C on, 80deg outside temps, partly sunny with occasional rain showers. Drove in manumatic mode in 6th when possible. Passing was done in 6th whenever possible unless I needed the power.
My mileage has improved dramatically since my last service. Before the service, my mileage has ranged from 15-18 city, 24-27 highway. Keep in mind that I have little self restraint when driving my fast car. ;)
It's true that the Sentronic tranny has a pretty aggressive shift profile-staying in the lower gears longer (thus reducing fuel economy). FWIW-driving in manumatic mode can help improve MPG. Upshifts to the next gear can be done at a minimum 1750RPMs. That's roughly 27mph in 4th, 37mph in 5th, 47mph in 6th. Starting off in 3rd in city can help improve city fuel economy, too.
I also have my tire pressures at the max 41psi (reduces rolling resistance, provides some protection from the numerous N'Awlins potholes). My Goodyear F1 GS-D3s have stickier rubber (more rolling resistance) than the OEM Contis, too-so keep that in mind when comparing mileage.
