2 points, the 'adjusted MPG' standard they now use ('08+) says these cars get 26 highway. I had an '00 9-3 SE (OG) I consistently got 28-31 MPG with a manual depending upon time of year (I'm in Ohio). Therefore the EPA would say you're getting an expected result. I also have an '07 sportcombi 60th but with an automatic. I get 25-27 with mostly highway. I took a trip with 3 adults and two kids and a trunk full of luggage to upstate NY in Nov. averaging 75 MPH and saw an average of 28.5 MPG. (best I've had). I expected a drop due to size increase of vehicle and the addition of the automatic. I too was depressed by the drop in mileage, BUT I use 89 octane and justify the difference with the fuel savings. I have 9k on mine now and am due for the first service. I hope for your sake it improves but I don't think it's likely. The same block in the smaller Cobalt (but 2.4L) and vario-valve timing gets 27 on the highway according to my father and that's a much smaller car. Sorry truth is it's the engine. That said at least the exhaust doesn't run under the oilpan. Duh! what a blunder.
