I felt the same way in my old '06 9-3 Aero convertible, and took it to a professional audio store to upgrade. The upgrade turned into a complete disaster, with the car going back 5 times to fix electrical glitches, speaker unbalance, a turn signal that became three times too loud (because it's generated through the speakers, not a separate relay) and eventually a front left channel that died completely. They never were able to fix it properly. These are guys that do high end jobs in all sorts of expensive cars in Los Angeles, and did a great job in my Alfa 164 S and my old 900 Turbo convertible...granted they had normal wiring!
The system is not even worth touching. You will have serious headaches if you try.
I agree that the stereo is laughable....I recently swapped the car for a 335i convertible (for many reasons....one of which was the awful stereo), and the difference in sound is amazing. Considering how good the stereo is in my '03 9-5 Aero wagon, I never understood how the 9-3's could be so crappy.
Cheers,
Paul H
