Conventional wisdom is that it is no longer necessary.
I did it anyway at about 1000 miles on my 2008 9-3 Turbo-X.
In the old days, engines would 'break in' with the moving parts wearing enough to fit better -- rings and cylinders mainly. You'd essentially get metal in the oil pan or filter and change the oil and filter to remove it. Some engines would even be run with 'break in oil' (pure mineral oil with no additives, I think). Modern machining is supposed to be so much more accurate that it is unnecessary. I was skeptical enough about the claim for unnecessary maintenance to spend the money and actually paid the dealer to do an early oil change. It wasn't because the oil was bad, but because of potential break-in contamination.
