Well, the majority says that it is not needed anymore. That said, it is at the very first miles of your car engine that you set the stage for the longevity of the engine's life.
If something gets worn right off the bat like piston rings or turbo seals, you are stuck with the problem for the rest of the cars life which could be a slightly higher oil consumption from oil passing through those more worn piston rings or turbo seals.
It is no precise science or statistic to this but more a feeling I have and what I have seen lately on Saab's from 1999 and up.
So doing one oil change prematurely now using correct oil and filter will cost you $100.00 or so and you will know that you did what you could even if the car later on show signs of oil consumption. If the car never start to consume oil, you will not know if it was because of your oil change or not but it won't really matter would it?
This is a real life story.
My sister in law bought a brand new 2001 BMW X5. Those use an oil monitoring system similar to Saab. The sales person told her that it didn't need any oil changes until the lights told her and that would be around 15K miles.
So she jumped in the car and drove and drove and drove until it started to sound, not too good, and she brought it in to the dealer. This was before the lights had indicated it needed a service and before 15K miles. They scolded her and told her that the engine was almost out of oil (engine takes 8q of oil) and she needed to do an oil change right now. They sternly told her that even though it doesn't need any oil changes until the light says so, she had to check the oil now and then and top off.
Ever since that incident, that car has been using a large amount of oil and we have had to top off on a regular basis between 10K oil changes. I started to service the car at 35K miles and it now has 255,000 miles but we have had to add oil, about 3 quarts, between oil changes ever since that first incident.
I can't say for sure but I believe that if she had topped off the oil or done an early oil change, it would have upped the chances that piston rings would stayed healthier.
And honestly, when the car sales person tells the buyer, you don't need to do any service or maintenance on this car until the light says so, 95% of the buyers take that as, I don't need to do anything until the light says so and the hood does not get opened until the mechanic see the car.
