Here is our advice (As a representative of a professional import automotive service/diagnostic/repair shop): We recommend synthetic oil service (for most any vehicle) at 5,000 mile intervals. Which puts most of our daily drivers at about two oil services a year.
You would probably be okay to go a bit over that but we don't advise extending the expectations of synthetic oil life beyond 7500 miles.
So depending on how many miles you are driving on a regular basis and what type of driving you are doing. You may be applicable for the SAAB service-reminder intervals of once a year (a service reminder resets to 365 days/99% oil life).
we can get in to all the variables and details about "ideal driving conditions" and oil service expectations....assume the engine is not leaking or consuming oil (for what ever reasons those may be) and speculate until the sun goes down....
Bottom line is: there needs to be a proper level of oil in the engine and it needs to remain as clean as possible throughout the life of the vehicle (meaning: at all times!).
Why people (your average car owning consumers)still struggle to understand the importance of this?... is beyond me.
....
BMW service reminders reset for 15,000 miles! F%#*ing seriously?! to they understand what happens to engine oil after 15,000 miles of service?! sludge. terrible, shameful, ungodly amounts of sludge. sticking to every possible surface inside the engine internals. for shame!
...enough. I'm done ranting (sorry everyone)
