GM now has a corporate engine oil standard, and 5W30 is the standard viscosity, and it replaces a plethora of different oil specs for different vehicles. It comes in two flavors, dexos 1 for gasoline engines, and dexos 2 for gasoline and diesel engines. It's a very high standard, and conforming oils tend to be synthetic. I have only ever seen dexos 2 once, at the 2012 Saab Owners' Convention parts tent. It was ACEA A3/B3, while most dexos 1 bottles are the thinner ACEA A5/B5.
I would (and did) use only oils rated with the old standard, GM LL 025 A/B. Mobil 1 0W40 and Castrol 0W30 are the widely available oils in the USA that meet it, and what with BP's oil spill on Florida's coast, I stick with Mobil 1. If I lived in Alaska, I might prefer the Castrol ;-)
In terms of viscosity, there is really very little difference between the Mobil and the Castrol. Mobil 1 0W40 skirts the absolute minimum limit for a "40", and Castrol 0W30 is ever so lightly lower (3% lower in HTHS viscosity).
