I recently traded in our '99 SAAB 9-5 SE Wagon for a 2005 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon. We really need two AWD vehicles where we live in Western Maine and love the reliability of our '93 Legacy AWD Turbo. The SAAB was a wonderful trip car - big, safe, comofortable and reasonably capable in terms of performance. What is lacked for us was bulletproof reliability (unlike our 12 year old Subaru, AWD capability (which actually DOES matter where we live, and reasonable cost of ownership.
We are very impressed with the Subaru - quite an evolution from our '93 car. The Subaru feels light, nimble and has a very firm, stable ride. The pull from the 2.5 liter flat 4 is impressive - 250hp and 250 ft.lbs. of torque (0-60 5.6 secs, 0-100 15.5 secs, etc... The exterior is crisp and understated. The only criticisms I have are: 1. the interior materials and ergonomics are definitely not up to SAAB levels and 2. the original equipment Bridgestone Potenza RE92's are also not up to the car's performance potential. The other plus for the Subaru is price - 23,000.00 for AWD, turbo, etc... seemed like a steal.
While I miss our SAAB, I don't miss worrying about having to replace another turbo unit, wondering if the DI would leave us stranded on an interstate somewhere with two small kids in the car, and dealing with high maintenance costs.
Best of luck with your decision making process - its a fun time - considering the options - its always a good excuse for driving whats out there and seeing what puts a smile on your face and meets your needs.
