I don't care what anyone else has to say, I know there is a huge difference. Few people know this because very few here on the board are exposed to southern Saabs. Let's face it, there aren't that many southern Saabs!
I spent the first 26 years of my life in the rust belt - north of Syracuse, but I have lived in Charlotte NC for the past 9 years. It's what's underneath that really counts. Saabs rarely ever show body rust, but if you are a shadetree mechanic or do any of your own work, the difference is night and day under the hood. The little details are what bother me. All of the fittings and clamps are setup frozen or rusted. Exhausts are totally ruined in a few years, and even if they are stainless, the clamps are useless. In comparison, my catback on my 9000 is original with almost 400k miles on it! Wheels bearings, suspension, overall paint quality/salt blasted hoods and bumpers, all compromised by the salt. Keep in mind that I was never aware of any these problems until I got spoiled here in the truly rust free south. Now I can spot a northern Saab in a line-up in a flash.
FWIW, I recently bought a 9-3 from Mass. that needed some engine work. The car had only 80k miles on it, so I figured it would be nice. The engine work was nothing compared to all of the corrosion restoration I have been doing underneath. The damn wheels were seized on from exposure! Total nightmare. I have another convertible here from NC, same color and more miles in fact, and the difference is night and day. If you are lucky enough to live in a rust free environment, buy your car here too. Your mechanic will thank you. :o)
