that we all encounter at least once in our lives.
I, myself, would never hit the clutch. With the extra foot tied up, it eliminates several options. With only a few short seconds to react, I'd like to be solely focused on: 1. finding the safest line to take without upsetting the balance of the vehicle. 2. threshold braking, and or acceleration, etc. 3. And if all else fails, having no way to prevent a curbage, setting the car up as to incur the least amount of damage or hit the least amount of fixed objects.
I think that one would find a much higher success rate if they would give up on trying to get out without any repurcussions. You've put yourself in the situation, now is the time to minimize the consequences. Trying kamikazi driving techniques may put you in the line of fire of oncoming traffic. You said yourself, that you were glad that there was no one else on the road. Had there been someone there, what would have happened? You probably wouldn't be posting here today, at least not about your current vehicle. The point is, not everyone has outstanding driving abilities, I'd hate to steer them away from the fundamentals to cater to an extremely unusual situation.
I'm not arguing, but I love bringing up both sides of the coin. Coolknight, you are one of the more respected people on this board, and I like to consider you as a 'buddy'. Don't take my disagreement as an attack. I'm just stating my personal style, and what I've been trained to do.
I do admit, though, some situations will require very abnormal tactics.
Cheers,
Brian.
