"GM happened to it." = ignorant BS.
1) Variation in production = $$$. The simpler the product, the better (for managing the process and profit). Eversince competition heated up the car business in the 70's, things haven't been the same. I'm sure they still have flexibility (to produce different models on the same line, but the multitudes of choices and options make for a manufacturing headache... think about it, bro).
2) If it wasn't for GM, Saab wouldn't be coming out with 5 or more products in the next decade. If GM is pushing anything, it's that Saab will only survive by compromising some former customer 'likes' for the greater goal of survival. Those packages annoy me also, but it gives them the profit to invest in things hopefully like the 9X. They still have to own up the the board of directors every year, you know?
Saab IS NOT Rolls Royce. For it to survive and succeed, it must compromise a little.
