I know Saabs aren't Rolls-Royces - but they're not Fiats either.
About 15 years ago I read a paper about flexible manufacturing and the author mentioned some ordinary mass-produced Japanese model (a Nissan something, as far as I recall) and said that out of 100,000 cars produced an average of just 5 would be completely identical (same engine, colour, interior, equipment etc.).
So, large-volume mass producers can offer a large choice. And we all know that exclusive low-volume producers do too. So it seems somewhat paradoxical that a medium-volume producer like Saab cannot do the same.
[BTW the reference to Soviet super markets had nothing to do with dictatorship but was intended to convey an image of inflexibility and limited choice]
I accept Brian's explanation regarding the painting of Aero body parts - but considering the fact that the cars, as far as I know, are all made on the same production line I find it strange that it is permitted to install a ventilated seat in a car destined for the US but not if the same vehicle is to be sent anywhere else (and especially considering the fact that until now they could).
And I still don't understand why the guy on the assembly line isn't allowed to take a dash from the shelf with wooden dashboards when it's an Aero that passes in front of him but has to take one of the ones that look like the inside of a beer can ;o)
Anyway, the fact remains that I was considering buying a new Aero - but I'm having second thoughts because of the seat question.
Regards,
Caspar
