I'd like your opinions on this letter:
8/10/01
To: All Saab Dealers
Saab Service Manager
From: Rich Miller
Code: 200
Reference: Addressing customer complaints of black exhaust smoke at cold startup, all 2000 and 2001 Saab models.
A customer complaint of black smoke from the exhaust during cold startup may be a normal condition. The fuel calibration during this short open-loop period is designed to enhance driveability and prevent stalling during the first few seconds of operation. Visible smoke can occur due to this calibration before entering closed loop operation.
The smoke normally does not appear when the engine is first started, but the vehicle is accelerated from a stop soon after startup. The condition can be influenced by ambient temperature and altitude, becoming more noticeable at lower temperatures and higher altitudes.
These vehicles are emission certified with this calibration and meet all Federal and state emission regulations under all termperature and altitude requirements. If there is no check engine light present or a customer complaint of a driveability issue, this is to be considered as a normal condition. Repair attempts without and engine light or a customer complaint will not be covered under warranty.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
Rich Miller
Manager,
