Have had a Saab front end protector on mine in the winter for three years. I take it off in April, and put it on when the snows get mounted. Front of hood looks better than average, but still not the best solution. I'm going to have the front of my 2002 Aero coated with the transparent 3-M film, which I have seen being applied at Gary Blake Saab in Exeter. I have the card of the local franchisee for this area, and I recall he is in Gloucester. Write with your e mail address, and I'll get it to you.
Big advantage of this is that it covers ALL front exposed surfaces, and is not very detectable to the naked eye. I think it runs about $500 to do the entire front of a Saab 9-5. One problem with the Saab hood protector is that the soft rubber bumpers that prevent it from hitting the hood tend to leave a mark of their own in the clear coat, and it looks bad after a few seasons.Advantage in theory is that it should deflect small debris up over the windshield, thus saving it some abraision. You'd never know it by looking at my windshield.
