There's no doubt whatsoever that the resale value is poor. Whether this helps you or hurts you depends. There are two ways to make it work for you. The most obvious way is to buy a used one and make the first guy take the hit.
Perhaps the more interesting approach is to watch the significant incentives that are periodically offered. This past summer and into the fall, corporate incentives meant that you could get a new one for $8K or more below list price. Others will know more about this than me, but my hunch is that these will vanish with the intro of the 2002 models, then reappear if the economy produces the expected sluggish sales. Since GM plans to have Saab double its sales volume over the next couple years, GM will likely be motivated to keep the volume up.
If so, then at some point in the next 4 to 9 months you'll be able to grab a nicely equipped base wagon for high-20's, which is a remarkable value. Even at the list price, these cars stack up *very* favorably vs. the German alternatives. With subsidized purchase prices, you can get a viable competitor to the Germans for only ~60% of the Germans' prices. Or, to put it another way, you'd be paying Accord/Camry money for a legitmate 5-series or E-class competitor.
Be sure to remember that, in this case, the resale issue is not a reflection of product quality. Rather, it's an artifact of supply/demand factors that are driven by fashion (and crappy Saab marketing), not substance. Seen in this light, I think their famously poor resale value serves to provide truly outstanding bargains if one approaches it the right way.
