that their reasoning is this. They are starting to realize that wide-spread leasing and large incentives are affecting resale. Therefore, you will start to see quite a bit more subsidized financing. The zero percent financing keeps the value of the vehicle up, and at the same time allows the customer to save money.
Remember, Saab is a highline vehicle. Whether it is pride or denial, I don't think that you'll see them lowering prices ant time soon. Instead, you will see better design, and value for the price that is offered (hence the NG 9-3 and the current and redesigned 9-5's).
Another thing to think about is our demographic. Saab owners are well educated and usually middle to upper middle class (in income). To lower prices, you would aim your vehicle at the Pontiac and Honda (examples) market. These people are usually show a lesser education, and have a close minded approach to buying vehicles ("my gran-pappy always told me to buy American", etc.). The upper range of buyers take pride in exploring their options, therefore they are a very win-able crowd. All you need is time, and a keen marketing sense(which, I realize we have been lacking up[ to the past few months).
It would also cut into GM's other makes to lower prices, whereas GM reallly doesn't have an international luxury/sport competitor. Therefore, they need Saab to fill that void. The fact of the mattter is, GM needs another success story. That is where Saab comes in; the transformation and growth will probably astound us in the coming years.
I truly believe that once Saab's lease numbers drop, the residual values will rise. Saab is doing this by offering the low (or no)interest financing. Also, in the future, as Saab is perceived as a reliable and valuable luxury import our resale will receive the boost accordingly.
Look at Europe. Saab's resale has risen there, and it will here also. Just give it time.
Cheers,
Brian.
