I had a 95 9000CS (light pressure turbo) auto tranny, a 97 9000 Aero 5 speed, and now drive a 9-5 Aero wagon auto. The 9-5 is better riding, better handling, and quieter, all to be expected considering the 9000 chassis was developed in the mid-80s. Probably the biggest difference is the IRS in the 9-5. The 9-5 doesn't have the sharp feel of the 9000, but for everyday driving that's not a bad thing. It does everything better but feels softer. I think the ride's too soft on 16" wheels, just o.k. on 17".
A lot of things are the same, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I had almost 220k on my 9000CS when I sold it, and the only thing that failed was the fuel pump at 150k. The Aero went through a tranny at 80k.
I did get spoiled by the room in the 9000 hatch, and that's why I opted for the wagon version of the 9-5. Didn't want to go down to a sedan.
