I also went from an '88 9000T to a 9-5 Aero, 2001 in my case. I have almost the same comments as Greg - if my wife didn't drive a 9-5 wagon, I wouldn't have gone with the Aero - despite the large and well designed trunk, it's not comparable to the 9-5 as a hauler (I once had a full sized supermarket shopping cart INSIDE my 9000T with the hatch closed! (not larceny, a completely legit photo prop!)
The 9-5 Aero is just a rocket compared to the 9000T. Much quieter, so speed is not that readily apparent. My 9000T, with 195K miles on it, needed a lot of stuff: engine and tranny mounts, A/C, etc. Considering the mileage, not bad at all. My 9-5 Aero has needed a DIC and CPS (free, courtesy of Saab), a new trunk wiring harness (also free, CPO item), some lamps/bulbs, and not much else in 1-1/2 years of ownership. It's service history before I bought it shows another DIC and cat converter (related failures), lots of lamps/bulbs, a SID and that's about it.
