I use the Loctite 518 Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Wed, 14 Jun 2006 08:56:14 In Reply to: What type of sealant did you use?, Joe [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 14 Jun 2006 05:46:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
And I apply it around the surface edge (top/bottom) that rest on top of timing cover and around the hole where the oil comes up from engine block to lubricate the camshafts.
I also place a layer on the other end where the oil is pouring down back into the engine block (rear engine cover).
I have seen a couple of cars where the head gasket was replaced by a dealer and that tech had been using the grey silicon stuff that is used on engine oil cooler lids for the V6 engine.
So it seems like some dealers are also picking up on the idea to use something extra in those areas even though I haven't seen a service bulletin about it yet.
This is only an attemp to fix a bad design and I still don't agree on the lowered torque specs for the 4 cyl engine that Saab came out with in around 97, especially since we didn't have a huge amount of leak problems before that.
And, when comparing it to the torque applied to the V6 engines where you almost break your back doing the bolts and no leaks are found on those engines. The V6 use the same sheet metal gasket.
