The A/C compressor requires power from the engine to run it. This horsepower draw is much more pronounced on a lower-powered motor - a greater percentage of power is being sucked up by the A/C. While it's true that the intercooler may see slightly increased temps with the A/C engage, this won't be immediate, such as when the A/C compressor clutch engages, nor will it be as great a power drain. The easy answer is to go drive them both!
