Really guys! I mean, how much, besides a pointer, can these crashtests REALLy tell about a cars safety. Here in Europe, the new Renault Laguna has scored higher than the 9-5 (tested in '99). The Laguna got 5 stars, the 9-5 got 4. Back when the Saab was tested, it was only possible to get 4 stars!
Anyway, I would STILL rather sit in the Saab than in the Lagun in a frontal!
What you should use your energy on, is to focus on REAL LIFE FACTS. In sweden, the largest inssurance company - Folksam - has studiet car-accidents since '69 and makes conclusions based on these accidents, not on lab-tests!
Take the 9000 series, it was developed in the early 80's and wa for 6 consecutive years in the mid-late 90's announced by Folksam as the safest car on the Swedish roads. I can tell you a funny story about exactly your concerns, the footwel: Back in the early 90's, one of Saab's own safety-engineers had a frontal crash. What his colleges couldn't understand was the fact that he didn't suffer any injuries to his right foot and knee! I numorous lab-tests, the dummy always showed injuries in this area. As the looked into it (talking to the driver, which btw only suffered minor scrathes!), it turned out that a dummy just sits there, acting dumb! Whereas a real driver is putting the brakepedal through the floor. This means that his foot/leg is focused and not dangling around. No THAT is learning by real life accidents.
Saab safety engineers also go out to accidents with paramedics, talk to police, doctors, drivers and occupants. Oh, and did you know that your Saabs has a black box, whih is sent to Trollhättan should your car ever be in a serios accident. They can then read out what you did just before the accident, speed, G-forces, steering-corrections and so on....
No guys, buy the book by Anders Tunberg about the development of the 9-5. Read the passage about the safety, be convinced that you're driving one of the 3 safest carmodels in the automotive world!!! As the say at Saab: "When or new models can meet the lab-test requirements, that when our safety-development begins".
Cheers!
