Is often missed by testers, manufacturers, and buyers. Crash tests are supposed to be predictors of safety. But unfortunately, I don't think IIHS is doing a very good job of matching up what the tests predict with real world accident data. In fact, IIHS doesn't even seem to want to try. Some vehicles which have poor test results do very well in real world conditions and others with stellar tests do very poorly in the real world. Weight still plays a very big part of this equation. A crash test is only a predictor of how your car would do if it ran into another car that was virtually identical. Of course, this seldom happens in the real world. I really would like to see IIHS and EuroNCAP do their own in house studies to see just how well their crash data predicts real world data but I don't expect to see anything like this anytime soon. It will probably take an independent third party to analyze the data and publish it because I beleive the data would produce some very serious criticisms.
