Ken: If your dealer told you not to use your Aero in snow as it sits on the 17 inch tires, he or she was soing you a favor, since an Aero on 17 inch High performance tires is going nowhere on snow or ice. the stock tires are absolutely useless on those surfaces. Put a set of four 16 inch winter tires and wheels on the car, and there is nowhere that you will not be able to go. I have driven 9000 Aeros and my current 9^5 with the winter package, and the car does quite well, enough so to make me question the current rage over four and all wheel drive systems.
As for chains, I have not used them in many years, but I do understand that in California, there are certain areas that you cannot drive if you do not have them(or a four wheel drive vehicle). Not 100% sure of the regulations on this.
If your Saab dealer cannot supply the Saab winter tire package due to availability, you can get a comparable set of tires and wheels from Tire Rack or other similar sources.
Bottom line is that the 225/45/17 tires on the Aero are not suitable for snow or ice. Maximum tire width for this car should be 215 mm, but you can do better with a 195 or 205 mm width. A narrower snow tire gets less build up of loose snow under it. One person on this board(I think it is Gary G),has reported on buying 225/45/17 snows for an Aero, but I do not recall if he has actually reported on results yet, since we in New England are getting a BYE winter so far.Glad we are not in Buffalo!
How about it Gary? Keeping the front end going forward?
Good Luck
