Inga, before you tackle a job like alternator r+r, check several other potential sources of problem. As the posters note, things as simple as battery connections, and the alternator connections, cable condition, switches or lights draining. Alternators normally last a long time, and the 2 main points of failure =pulley bearings (you would hear this), and the voltage regulator, due to worn bushings, quite possible on a my 99. The vr can be replaced on your alternator, but I believe folks do this with alternator out of car . R+R requires removal of quite a few bits on the engine = upper mount, belt tensioner w/pulley, and idler pulley, as well as downpipe. 2 bolts -upper and lower-on the generator itself. It can be done diy, but thoroughly check other possibilities first. Good luck- Tom S.
