On my former 275K mile 2000 9-5 I used the long belt and then switched to the short belt when it became available. My only failure (the little exploding pulley) was the original when I decided to ignor Saab's recommendation and go for a 120K mile interval. At 106K miles the small pulley disintegrated. I switched to the recommended 60K mile interval and long, then short belts with no problem.
For the record, I always change all pulleys when I do the belt.
Finally, my new 2007 9-5 has a short belt; the knomes in Sweden did it that way.
