IIRC it's Amsoil that has recommended a long service life with intermittant filter changes and topoffs. There are folks who have gone through the bother of having their oil lab-tested and, essentially, proven that the approach works.
But who wants to pay to lab-test their oil?
New from the bottle, synthetic has numerous advantages over regular dino oil, especially with turbocharged cars. I've used it in all my Saabs and can at least say the stuff works. I've never had a wear failure of any engine component, including turbo and timing chain. Another benefit: with my SE V6, mileage immediately jumped between 5% and 10% upon making the change (in my old 99, the idle speed jumped from 850 to 1200 rpm).
It costs roughly $10 more per oil change to use synthetic. Consedering that you get a longer service life (I change mine at six-month intervals) and better mileage, along with less engine wear, using synthetic becomes a no-brainer: That's no more than $200 over 100,000 miles to protect a $40,000 car.
