Absolutely true - if I didn't have the ability and time to do my own repairs, I would have gotten rid of the car much earlier. I probably saved at least 50% over what people who take their car to a mechanic pay for any given repair, and it still wasn't a particularly cheap car to work on.

I actually got off without most of those problems you mention: I never had to do the heater valve, window regulators, wiper transmission, fog lights, or steering column. But I did have to do the IDM, Code 08 ACC fix, the theft alarm batteries, CPS, turbo, PCV update, wheel bearing, and the fuel pump. That's a fair bit of work for 34k miles of ownership, and would have been ridiculously expensive had I not done the work myself.
