While I accept the point that maintenance and build quality vary from car to car, I also understand that there are design issues that can improve or reduce a given design's reliability. Many of the failures in modern cars are specific components (often electrical) that are more failure-prone than the rest of the car around them.
The most frustrating failures are the ones that are a) hardest to prevent, and b) leave you stranded. Regular maintenance will not prevent a sensor from dying, or a DBW throttle body from failing, and that one component can leave you stuck.
My car's failures were largely the result of maintenance issues compounded by design issues. The turbo failures that the lpt cars experience are documented - I was happy mine went as long as it did. Same for the idler pulley. The transmission was a surprise, but certainly may have been maintenance dependent. The failures that affect many less maintenance-conscious owners, however, are less acceptable: IDM, CPS, PCV. These are all failures that result from component design issues, and will leave the car inoperative.
So while I take your point that one cannot perfectly measure individual cars against each other, I submit that the common reliability problems of any given design can be reasonably clearly identified. When maintenance well beyond the manufacturer's recommendations, including preventive replacement of components not even listed as maintenance items, is required to keep cars from suffering spontaneous breakdown, it does not tend to promote the image of a reliable design.
All this being said, Saab is not alone in this. The first thing I did when I bought my 525i was to throw almost $600 worth of cooling system parts into it to prevent the radiator and expansion tank from exploding, the water pump from seizing, and the thermostat from failing (all common failures in the E39 5 series cars).
