It depends on what you're comparing. The local dealer's service dept. is very good. Parts are always more expensive than at the local indys, but the labor rate is about the same. The most respected local Saab specialist indy is down pretty much to the owner and a helper, after years of having more staff on hand. His labor rate isn't significantly cheaper than the dealer, and his parts aren't drastically less expensive. I don't think he's the most personable guy I've ever met, FWIW.
The dealer, who manages to retain his top Saab techs (more than 15 years for a couple of them), offers free loaner Saabs, an extremely competent service manager, a first rate service writer (not as trivial as you might think...), and a much too fancy place to hang out when you're just in for an oil change. All of his people have uniformly been pleasant, helpful and good at what they do.
In all the years we've owned Saabs - we're going on our 6th, now - the only time we've ever been ripped off was by a rather "famous" independent Saab specialist. Not only did he needlessly replace a water pump (completely unrelated to our breakdown problem far from home...) but he also botched the job big time. When we got home, the car was making so much noise that I left it at the dealer. His master tech took about 10 minutes to find the problem.
So, you can't really typify all dealers or all indys as either good or bad.
