There are several things that separate the V70 from the 9-5 wagon. One, the SAAB has free maintenance for 3yr/36k miles-the Volvlo doesn't. The base model 9-5 wagon has more HP than the base V70, and has more standard features than the base V70. If you move up the scale to the LPT turbo version of the V70 to get comparable HP ratings and add the options to bring it up to spec to a base 9-5 wagon. the V70 costs more. And the fact that you can get a considerable discount on the price of a 9-5 compared to the V70, the 9-5 wins.
The V70 does have 2 things on the safety front the 9-5 doesn't. Seat belt pretensioners at all 5 seating positions (SAAB has it only for the front passengers), and the curtain airbag protection for all outboard passengers. If that's truly important to you. Wasn't an overriding concern for me. Both are extremely safe cars, and you can't go wrong with either one.
I tried the V70 and it's nice. But I chose the SAAB-in part because I already own one-also, due to the heavy discounting of the 9-5 wagon at the time I bought it in 10/2001 combined with the free maintenance made it an easy choice.
Good luck with your decision.
