Let's say you're out for a ride on a 10-speed bicycle. You're breezing along in a high gear, but you come up on a situation where you have to stop. Ordinarily, when it's time to go again, you would drop the gearing down to a lower gear, get peddling, and then move up progressively to a higher gear. Just imagine if you came to a stop, but left it in the higher gear. When you'd start peddling, you'd have to push down VERY hard on the pedal in order to get back up to speed. That pedal, actually referred to as a "crank", would be stressed much harder than necessary. Basically, the way it was explained to me, is that starting off or driving around in too high of a gear ("lugging") puts similar stress on the crankshaft of your engine, to say nothing of the loss of efficiency by not utilizing the engine's most efficient operating ranges.
