You can't hurt it, as at very low speeds your operating thru the torque converter, which is simply two fans in a fluid filled can. One fan is driven by the motor and drives the fluid; the other, connected to the transmission is driven by the fluid. Other than being inefficient (slips), you can't hurt anything. This is why you can stop with the car in gear and not stall the engine. Now if the torque converter was in 'lock-up' mode, where the torque converter is basically bypassed and the engine is directly connected to the transmission, then all the things that were said by the other posters would hold.
Modern automatic transmissions now have varying degrees of lock-up, for smooth shifting and economy, but that's another story.
