I think what your mechanic is saying exactly, is to use conventional oil and change it at 3000 miles, as compared to synthetic oil changed at 10,000 miles. IMO, you should be using synthetic 5W40 diesel oil at 5000 mile change interval, although you can use conventional 15W40 diesel oil at the same interval.
The 9-5 seems scary because when something breaks, it's often a very expensive electronic gizmo. But the reality is that such failures are really quite rare, while C900s require a lot more frequent, if less expensive repairs. There is no reason not to expect two and three hundred thousand miles easily from a 9-5, and there are folks on the list who have achieved this.
