Rotella synthetic (5W40) is what I use year around. Mobil 1 5W40 "turbo diesel formula" (aka Delvac 1) is an alternative.
Advantages of diesel oil:
1) specifically designed to handle the blowby that typically happens more with diesel engines than gasoline engines on account of the high compression ratio.
2) extra dispersant additives to deal with the carbon bits that work their way into diesel oil. I am *guessing* that this also helps prevent the typical accumulation of sludge particles that are characteristic of these engines.
3) extra anti-wear additives (specifically phosphorous compounds) to protect the heavily loaded diesel engine valve train components. In years past Saabs had issues with timing chain wear. Although it seems to have been solved, I'm guessing that the extra anti-wear additives are a help here also.
The main disadvantage - American heavy duty diesel oil typically doesn't have ACEA ratings.
