I live in denver and have driven Saabs here for 30 + years . I use belt dressing and although I changed the belt at 80k it could have easily lasted 100k miles.
On my 1986 9000T the alternator was still good at 225k miles when the car was wrecked, the water pump was changed at around 140k .
Now from many years of experience working on cars, in the days before the auto tensioner - yes you could do damage to the water pump bearing if you over tightened the belt , some would fail after you changed a belt but they were close to wearing out anyways.
On my 1999 9 - 5 2.3T the alternator and water pump are original at 120K and from reading this board those parts don't seem to have excessive early failure rates - the alternator may be mitsubishi now but I'm not certain.
So back to your question - I only take cars to the dealer for warranty work, and yes it would not be compleltely inconceivable in my opinion to damage the water pump bearing while changing a serp belt, but you'd have to be a hack to do that. And it would hard to see how a belt change could damage the the alternator bearing - the are pretty robust by design.
On my wife's 2004 9-5 - lots of warranty failures - CPS, heat by pass, TB, valve body transmission, multiple HVAC repairs . So I'm not impressed by the quality of some of the components.
