Douglass: My sentiments exzctly. I have a manual 9-5 lpt,and will be getting a new Aero in about a month or so. The five speed manual in the Saab is just plain rubbery feeling, but the dead spot in second gear at low RPM is really the biggest drawback to it( that and having to shift in the first place). The new five speed auto in the 02 models is certainly a step beyond the four speed autos, but that should not stop you from buying an 00 or 01 model if you find one you like. The auto in the 9-5 is just plain better for the car,and eliminates the dead spot completely. Another benefit of autos in general is that they smooth out the driveline whip that is common with manuals and clutches. YOu will notice less rocking of the engine on it's mounts as it shifts since the torque converter takes up a bit of this and smoothes out the entire car. In the case of the Saab transmission, the use of the sport mode will make you forget about the Vroom vroom boy racer thrill of shifting in about a day. I have ben driving manual shift cars for about thirty five years, and have finally sen the light. There is really just about no reason to keep shifting ,other than it being in your blood and you need to keep busy.
The next wave in shifting is already making it's mark in the form of the electro-hydraulic shifted transmission, which will replace arm and left leg movements with those of hydraulic actuated solenoids that do the job in a fraction of the time that you could, and can me set to operate either manually or automatically. Saab has one in the 9-X and 9-3X concept cars, and don't be surprised if it makes it's way into future models. This will in my opinion, replace the conventional manual gearbox within ten years, at least in high end cars like this.
Go try the auto 9-5, and make sure you try the sport mode. You will not know you are driving the same car after comparing it to your current one.
