Here are some interesting comments from a comparitive review that Car and Driver did back in May of 2000. It seems they liked the 4-speed auto much better than the manual. Too bad I didn't read this before I bought my car. :) Oh well. See link at bottom for entire article.
--------------- begin quote ------------------
In our December road test of the 9-5 Aero, we kvetched about four-cylinder vibration and idle quality, we carped about the rubbery shifter, and we whined about torque steer and nonlinear power delivery -- all of which struck us as unseemly in a car that cost more than $40,000. All those problems are solved with the four-speed automatic. The engine is infinitely better isolated from the chassis and driver. The Trionic computer coordinates gentle torque limiting for smooth but snappy shifts as the little four-banger rushes to a top-three finish in most of our acceleration tests. Its 153-mph top speed bested the field by at least 11 mph. Most important of all, torque steer is all but exorcised.
