The RPM hanging beteen gears that John describes is my biggest annoyance with the manual transmission. In fact it's not really a complaint about the tranny, but the engine management system which prevents the engine from slowing down quickly. This is most noticible when shifting up from 1st to 2nd, due to the big jump in gearing. After disengaging 1st gear, you need to wait a second or 2 for the engine speed to drop in order to smoothly engage 2nd gear. If you shift too quickly, you get a lot of driveline lash because the engine is still spinning faser than the tranny. If you do pause long enough for the shift to be smooth, then you've lost performance due to a really slow shift as well as probably having lost your turbo boost. It doesn't feel as bad if you hold 1st gear to 3500 RPM or so, but if you shift up at a lower RPM then it is quite noticible.
I noticed this when I first test drove the car, but I liked the car so much that I gave it the benefit of the doubt. I thought I'd either get used to it or it would go away as the car got broken in. Unfortunately that hasn't happened, and I kind of wish I'd gotten the automatic. If somebody finds a way to change this characteristic, I'd be much happier with the manual tranny. I doubt that it's possible without dealer support though, since it's probably programmed into the ECU.
