Thanks for your reply. I posted too fast, the place I use called me back almost first thing this AM. He says the suspension work is about $1150, he's got a used parts source tat he's secure with. The rear gate is freed up and not an issue. the body work to go perfect would run it up to about $4K. We've used this pace over the years a few times and are confident with them, it's an old family business that's been there 60 years.
You are absolutely right about these decisions being relative. From our point of view, we've got two guys who will go to college in September 2010, and it really makes sense to have this as our transport car at least though that full academic year. At the same time, it wold not make sense to buy a new vehicle like this now, since we only need the hauling ability for a couple of years more. Our style is always to use a car until it's done. the car this replaced was a 1982 Volvo Wagon that we bought in 1989 and kept until it was going to cost too much to get through the next PA emissions in 1999. Our almost 10 year old Mazda 323 was stolen at the end of 1995 (a parts order--who steals a 323 with a stick and two baby seats in it?), the replacement 626 was totaled in early 1999 and the replacement for that is still going strong.
As long as the car operates safely and properly the body issues are minor to us, as long as there is no broken metal or dangers. If somehow we are found to not be deserving any insurance money, we can just have him pull the dents and make sure the door closes properly. The damage did not get to gas cap level, nor is the panel impacting the wheel.
So now it's wait for their insurance. I know there is a school of thought that since I turned left it's my accident even though the other car was going to fast or too carelessly to pull up once they could see the intersection. The cop felt all the fault was theirs, but that's not the insurance. Had I still had my collision coverage I'd have been in better staid as my company would have more reason to fight for me, although I would think they'd want to have the fault the other way to avoid paying the total plus the burns from the airbag on the other car. Other vehicle was a 1996 Quest, the whole front works exploded off, both airbags even though there was no passenger, and some of the damage may have hit into the engine area. It's gone.
I am really happy I was in the wagon and not our 626 for this--at the impact, which was enough to spin me clockwise over 90 degrees, I could really feel how solidly the Saab is built and how it took the energy. Had this been the sedan I am sure it would now be useless.
