My first year of Onstar expires in 2 weeks. I cannot imagine renewing it. $199 + $40 for 100 minutes? That's $2.39 per minute if I actually use all the minutes.
I got the 30 days / 30 free minutes when the car was new and used maybe 5 of them and those mostly for the novelty. I then bought 100 minutes good for 1 year, and have used 44 over the next 11 months. The rest will evaporate soon.
So, at that rate, if I renew I can expect to spend $239 for 49 minutes of use on a phone that I can't use to call my answering machine or any business that is answered with a menuing system. That's $4.90 per actually used minute.
Also, it's useless as an incoming phone because it only works while I am in the car and the engine is running. It's senseless to give the number to people who may want to contact me.
I am willing to buy 100 minutes for $40, but I am not willing to ALSO have to pay $200 per year in order to be able to buy the minutes.
Not having a keypad severely limites the utility of the phone, rendering it nearly useless.
The best thing Onstar has going for it is that the coverage is excellent - far better than a normal cell phone.
Concierge service? Give me a break. Let all those people go, close down the call center, cut the overhead and stop the silly pretensions that OnStar has some value other than as a limited, hands free carphone. With that done, maybe they could afford to sell the minutes at a reasonable rate.
