The cost is obscene. The safety service, which for Saabs is an air bag deployment alarm only, will be useful in only a very, very few air bag deployments, of which there will be precious few. Most accidents do not happen away from other cars or civilization where in matter of common experience calls to police happen almost instantaneouly from people who observe accidents and know exactly where they are because they are, get this, actually there.
For 2001 Saab owners, the Onstar system actually makes the car LESS useful than earlier models. For instance, 2000 year owners could directly wire in one of several Nokia phones to built in wiring by Saab. Onstar equipped cars lost that advantage and option because the system took over that wiring. I gues one could go Uhltronics. I have three friends besides myself who bought new GM cars with onstar. Not one of us has ever pushed the stupid little button. We all travel, we all are, as is most of this list professionals. If just is of no use to anyone but a deletante. If Saab wanted that circuitry to be useful, it and GM would make the built in circuits available to the cell phone and service of our choice or to facilitate, rather than hindering, putting in our own cell phones as we choose. Second, since there is a built in GPA antenna, the circuitry should be available for us to install the aftermarket GPS system of our choice. For instance, if you have ever used the GPS system in Hertz rental cars with voice prompts in a strange city, it is a real joy. You would kick out the know nothing CRT readers of Onstar in an instant. Right now, the GPS machines are more useful -- and in the car full time, ready to give new instructions the moment the route changes or you might make a wrong turn. Or, GM could simply reduce the price of the car, or put in a higher grade stereo, or on and on.
