A bit of a follow-up here...
I spent a couple hours enduring the 112 degree temps in the garage yesterday trying to figure this thing out. I visually (re)verified the following:
1. Left blend door and stop arm rotating.
2. Right blend door and stop arm rotating.
3. Right vent distribution arm rotating along with the large "drum" (viewed rotating on both sides).
One thing that kept bothering me is that I couldn't figure out if the recirculation button was actually changing anything. In fact, it has been a long time since I even paid attention to it. I finally figured out where that motor is located and I removed it. The shaft protruding the from the motor is broken (link arm is intact), the gears inside are stripped, and the plastic case around where the shaft protrudes is broken.
For now I've got a tiny bungee cord keeping the flaps in recirculation mode. This greatly helps the AC temps in the cabin, though there remains the differential between the left and rear vents (warmer) and the right vents (colder). Perhaps that is the way this system works...direct all A/C air through the passenger vents and have the driver and rear vents simply recirculate that air???
At the very least, I need to source a replacement recirculation door motor.
Regards,
Greg Bender
