I'm up in the air on whether to get a VW or a Saab wagon, too. I ruled out the Volvo---too plasticy, depreciation is HORRIBLE even versus a Saab and U-G-L-Y.
The VW offers a nice package. My brother has a 2000 that has been wonderful. The ride is solid, its well built and pretty sharp. Passenger room is great---he can easily handle loading his wife, two kids plus a dog for a week away.
BUT, it's not a Saab. The 9-5 is roomier, has a better (different) ride in my humble opinion, has better performance and is better value for the money.
On the money...the new base linear wagon runs $35.3 at MSRP and $33.2 invoice. Pull out the $3K customer cash and you could wrangle a new linear wagon for $30K and change. Drop $1K if you already have a Saab (loyalty coupon). For that you get...great engine and sport suspension, PLUS heated seats, leather, sunrise, climate control, CD etc...
Upper 20's for a 1 or 2 yo 9-5 is WAY HIGH.
A comparable Passat will run $29K (more for 4motion).
Frankly, my decision hinges on service. I love the 9-5 but my local dealer is an idiot...so I may buy a Passat when my 900 finally bites the dust.
