Ed, it's not your fault as you're fairly new to the board but, this subject has gone round and round and round again that it starts to get boring.
The Saab 9-5 is a class leader. Browse the board and you'll find lots of other posts and threads with reference points on this topic.
Euroncap which is one of the most stringest tests in force right now found that the 9-5 outperformed by a significant margin in both frontal (but especially) lateral impacts such cars as the BMW 5, Mercedes E class, Audi A6, and the very latest Volvo S80 - all this with a chassis dating back to 1998!!
The 9-5 is safer than most of these cars in lateral impacts even without airbags - although I can't remeber where I read this last point.
Your family will be in one of the world's greatest and safest automobiles - check out other peoples' posts regarding accident experiences.
