Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s 40-mph frontal offset crash test on the Saab 9-5. We are proud of the 9-5’s crashworthiness design and construction-which is often validated by the very good crash test data results it achieves. However, we continue to be focused on a real-life safety philosophy that emphasizes real people in real-life collisions.
For example, in approximately 50 percent of frontal collisions, the driver’s right foot is on the brake pedal-a real-life reaction to an impending collision. Saab engineers have therefore designed a special brake pedal bracket ion the Saab 9-5 that breaks away during a collision to lessen the impact on the lower leg and foot. Unfortunately, this type of innovation is not taken into account during a laboratory crash test. These tests, including IIHS test, place the dummy’s right foot on the accelerator. Therefore, although it is not recognized during the test, this safety innovation will undoubtedly help Saab owners in a real-life crash.
If consumers want information on crash tests, Saab also recommends the EuroNCAP study. The EuroNCAP program includes a front crash (similar to the IIHS), a side crash and other evaluations. In this study, the Saab 9-5 received four stars and accumulated the highest point total ever in the side collisions test. In addition, Saab subjects its vehicles to over 40 test configurations in its engineering development-of which only 11 are required. For additional real-life results, Saab also recommends consumers look at actual injury results from insurance claims as found in the U.S. Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) and Sweden’s Folksam Insurance Company data. These data show Saab occupants to have personal injury rates far below the industry average.
Saab also has an emphasis on avoiding crashes in the first place. For many years, all Saabs have had the following as standard equipment: daytime running lights, 4-wheel ABS, a wide angle passenger-side mirror, front-wheel drive, front and rear fog lights, halogen headlights, “driver in control” steering and handling, and excellent driver ergonomics. For obvious reasons, accident avoidance should be considered the ultimate in real-life driver safety.
