From real life experience of running a SAAB specialty shop for over 20 years:
The original aluminum oil cooler in the SAAB 2.5L 900 is the same as the one in a 9-5. The same aluminum oil cooler was used in Saturn and Cadillac Catera vehicles. Later when the 3.2 liter was introduced at Cadillac, the new design oil cooler was released. It actually is Steel and Copper, not plain steel. Copper is quite good at heat transfer. Heat exchangers such as this one, that are water cooled, are much more efficient at dissipating heat, than Air-cooled ones. When cooling oil, one factor that reduces efficiency is a change in viscosity in the oil where it comes in contact with the surface of the cooler. This is less of a problem in a thermostatically controlled liquid cooled application such as this. There is another reason for this type of oil cooler arrangement. It actually helps warm up the engine faster.
Bottom line: buy the cadillac oil cooler simply because it will not fail.
