V6 Timing Odyssey continues... Posted by AMG [Email] (#3110) [Profile/Gallery] (more from AMG) on Tue, 8 Dec 2009 11:56:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Today I exposed the camshafts. Number 2 camshaft is clearly out of position. Given that I am not positive that camshaft 1 is still aligned properly with 3-4, and I know 2 is out of whack, the only way I can see to make sure this is done correctly is to remove all 4 camshafts and retime the engine from scratch. I have a few (possibly stupid) questions:
From WIS:
"Remove the camshafts: It is important to conclude removal at the bearing cap where the tappets are under load. Remove the Stuffing boxes." I'm not sure what this means, how do I determine "where the tappets are under load"?
On refitting the camshafts:
After fitting the valves 9 (won't be touching them) but before fitting the camshafts WIS says to "refit the spark plugs".
Then turn the engine to 60 degrees BTDC and fit the camshafts.
Then fit the camshaft cover, the DIC cassettes, and the camshaft sprockets.
Then fit the waterpump. idlers, timing tensioner.
Then turn to 0 degrees TDC.
Then fit the timing belt.
MY questions about the above part: Why does WIS recommend putting the plugs and DICs back on at this point? Doesn't the presence of the plugs cause problems timing the engine? Any reason to just put it together in the reverse order I took it apart instead?
AND a bigger, overarching question: Is removing the Camshafts a difficult or tricky job? It looks simple but I want to be sure because I've never done anything like it before.
A million thanks to all who are following this and have been so helpful.
