It can be quite difficult to get the cover off, without damaging the plastic housing.
You should be able to search this board for "key battery replacement", "key battery cover" or similar, get dozens of posts.
On the side of the key, you'll see a small hole. There's a plastic "latch" that you depress through the hole, and the cover comes off. Easier said than done. You really need three hands, one to hold the key, one to depress the latch, and a third to pry off the cover.
I use a vise for one of the hands, to hold the key. If you don't have that option, but can find something to hold the depression device (e.g., drive a small finish nail in a stationary board...).
Before I put mine back together, I use emery board and try to file off some of the latch. It doesn't need to be THAT secure.
