THey have different wear ratings depending on the application for which the tire is used (all season, performance, etc). Higher performing tires (say, "summer" tires like the Bridgestone S-03 or Pirelli P Zeroes) will have a much lower wear rating due to their softer rubber compounds that places a higher emphasis on handling, traction, etc. These types of tires are the tires used by SAAB (Aero, Viggen, etc) and other makers on the high performance cars. All season tires, will have a lower wear rating in general due to the different and harder rubber compounds for winter use.
It is not a scam, per se. High performance sedans need high performance tires to extract said performance. Do you think a Porsche would be a Porsche on Kelly tires? Why is this a scam?
It's just that it seems the general public at large is mostly ignorant of this fact and think that they can slap those $100/set of four tires specials with 100k mile warranty on their sports sedans when the OEM tires wear out to save some dough.
