I've solved most of my car issues here by reading old posts; this is the first one I've written. Thanks for the prompt reply. You appear to be correct, and the shop came to the same conclusion today. It took them a good while to determine this, and partly by process of elimination, but they got there eventually. (It isn't the ignition, not the fuel pump, no fault codes, therefore... )
Anyway, the idle is much smoother now, and starting is quicker, so this is almost sure to have solved the problem. It took getting the idle right to make me realize just how bad it had been without being quite bad enough to make me very aware of the problem. It does make me wonder if the last dealer installed a fuel pump when they should have installed a crank position sensor, but my 99 EMS and my 900S both needed fuel pumps at some point too, so it's all good.
